British archaeologists have recently found that a brain in a skull discovered in 2008, a site dating from the Iron Age, is about 2,600 years old.
It was discovered in the skull of a person being buried face down in a wet clay near York, UK.
The team of 34 scientists from York Archaeological Trust, because it was covered with a thick layer of mud, the skull was oxygenated some 2000 years so that he was prevented decomposition of the soft, spongy.
Researchers describe the soft tissue as having "elastic texture, such as tofu".
The fact that the soft tissue still looks like a brain is extraordinary, given that it is 2600 years old.
"I looked through the hole at the base of the skull to investigate. To my surprise, I saw a quantity of bright yellow foam. It was different than anything I've seen before," said Rachel Cubbitt, one of the team research.
According to them, the brain would have belonged to a person who was hit in the head with a hard object and then beheaded.
"An examination of the vertebrae of the neck tells us first that was hit hard in this area, then neck was cut with a small sharp knife," said one of the researchers. The person concerned had between 25 and 45 years old at death.
That was probably buried immediately ensured the survival of the brain over a long period of time, researchers now working to further its preservation.
