How are the "gift of drunkenness" and intelligence? Scientists have discovered an important aspect of this relationship

People who consume too much alcohol are less intelligent, the relationship is especially evident in young men showed a study in Sweden.

It was known for some time that susceptibility to frequent drunkenness is correlated with IQ (IQ) lower, but it was believed that alcohol abuse is affecting brain function, reducing cognitive abilities.

This recent study showed, however, first, that the causal link between intelligence and alcohol abuse looks different: no alcohol reduces IQ but lower intelligence predisposes those individuals to excessive alcohol consumption.

The association is especially evident among young males who get drunk frequently, shows study conducted by researchers at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm and published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research.

There are other factors that may predispose people to excessive alcohol consumption: financial situation, social and education also play a role, say researchers who analyzed data on 50,000 young men.

But even after adjusting for these factors eliminate the contribution was found that there is a clear relationship between low IQ and alcohol abuse in young men.

Researchers analyzed data on about. 50,000 Swedish men born between 1949 and 1951 and who performed military service between 1969 and 1971.

Those who had the highest risk of having had alcohol problems and the lowest scores on intelligence tests.

With high probability, low intelligence is what increases the risk of alcohol abuse, say researchers. A reverse causal relationship (excess alcohol would be one that reduces cognitive abilities) is possible for a small number of people, but is unlikely to be seen in young people.

You might think the experts, that a high IQ to result in a healthier lifestyle.
