How many smokers die from smoking really? A new study gives a clear answer - VIDEO

Previous studies suggested that about half of smokers die from a disease associated with smoking, but more recent research shows that things are even more frightening: two thirds of smokers die from the habit, and smoking shortens life on average ten years.

The latest study in the field, conducted in Australia and published in the journal BMC Medicine, included approx. 200,000 people and showed that smokers risk of death three times higher than those who never smoked.

Smoking just 10 cigarettes a day doubles the risk of death, and smoking 20 cigarettes a day increases the risk of 5 times.

Until recently it was believed that about half of smokers die from a disease associated with smoking, but new research conducted in the UK and the US have shown a much higher - up to 67% - and the Australian study confirmed These results, with a large sample of approx. 200,000 people over 45 years who were followed for 4 years.

The good news, say researchers, is that quitting smoking brings clear benefits and sustainable health plan. For those who quit smoking by the age of 45 years, increased risk of death is almost completely annihilated.
