NASA is currently developing a flying saucer for the first manned mission to Mars.
The new spacecraft is part of a project called low density supersonic retarder (LDSD). The rocket will weigh around 3175 pounds and have a width of about 12 meters.
In June 2014, NASA conducted the first test of the LDSD. The government agency wanted to see how they will perform two devices which would be used during the mission where people will go to Mars, but unfortunately, a parachute did not open properly during testing.
Technologies would help spacecraft landing safely on the red planet. It also would allow sending heavy payload on Mars.
The purpose of the mission is to explore certain regions of the planet. The dense atmosphere of Mars makes it difficult to research today.
