A small passerine bird migrates over the ocean at a distance of 2,700 kilometers

Sethofaga striated, a small songbird, even traveling 2,700 miles on his way overseas.

The long journey of these birds begins in northeastern United States and eastern Canada to the Caribbean and part of the winter migration to South America, according to a new study.

Scientists have suspected for some time that birds fly across the ocean to the Caribbean, but only now managed by means of tracking devices to demonstrate this. They were installed last summer.

"It's spectacular and amazing how this bird that weighs 14 grams can do what is obviously a very risky and dangerous journey across the ocean," the study authors noted.

Andrew Farnsworth, migration biologist, says that studying these birds travel might help us to better understand the implications of climate change.

In the world there are many birds that fly long distances over oceans, but this is different because its natural habitat is the forest. Most birds migrate to fly over Mexican Caribbean and Latin America.
