Why do people kill whales?

Killing whales is a very old occupation. Basques did so in the Bay of Biscay early 11th century killing whales has become established in North America in the eighteenth century.

The main reason for that whaling is practiced to get whale oil. It is the huge whales and those with large bones, the blue, humpback.

By the mid-19th century, was used on every occasion it was necessary oil: the candle, lubrication, lubrication of metal finishing leather garments and the manufacture of butter.

Whale oil was used mainly in the production of soaps and margarine.

The amount of oil is higher in whales found in Antarctic waters and the Arctic Ocean during spring and wealth, when whales were feeding in large quantities. A blue whale provides about 19,080 liters of oil and a sperm whale offers about 7,950 liters.

A consequence of whaling is that some species - such as blue whales, white and gray - are endangered. An international commission was formed to defend whales in 1946, to control the number of whales hunted. But it was not effective.

Blue and humpback whales have become increasingly rare, almost extinct. We make great efforts to avoid whales disappear.
