Top 15 most intelligent US presidents of all time



Dean Simonton, a psychology professor at the University of California, conducted in 2006 for a comprehensive analysis of "intellectual brilliance" of 42 US presidents. Based on those results, Libb Thims, an American engineer passionate IQ tests, achieved a top 15 leaders of the most intelligent Americans.

1. John Adams


John Adams was the second president of the United States during the period 1797-1801, after having served as first vice president of the nation under the leadership of George Washington. He had an IQ of 173.

Adams studied law at Harvard and was one of the first supporters of the American movement for independence from England. Ambitious, intelligent, and conceited, he often complained that the vice president's wife is insignificant.

He is often praised for his diplomatic skills, helping to negotiate a peace treaty during the War of Independence and avoiding a war with France during his tenure as president.

2. Thomas Jefferson


Thomas Jefferson was one of the "founding fathers" of the United States. He served as the nation's third president, from 1801-1809 and had an IQ of 160.

He graduated from the College of William and Mary, and then studied law. Jefferson was a poor orator, according to White House records. So he reluctantly ran for president, after winning the Republican Party leadership gradually.

Jefferson opposed a centralized government. The first legislative initiative that has promoted after winning the elections was the removal of a very unpopular tax on whiskey.

3. John F. Kennedy

John F. Kennedy (pictured) was the 35th President of the United States, serving more than three years before being assassinated in 1963. He had an IQ of 158.

Kennedy graduated from Harvard University in 1940 after which he joined the US Navy, where he was severely wounded in the Second World War.

He was elected president in 1960 when he supported some of the most memorable speeches of investment in recent history. "Do not ask what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country," he sent them Americans.

Kennedy is best known for its fiscal programs that have allowed the expansion of the US economy, but also the pressure applied to the adoption of legislation on civil rights and equality.

4. Bill Clinton


William Jefferson "Bill" Clinton was the 42nd President of the United States, serving between 1993 and 2001. His IQ would be 156.

After graduating from Georgetown, Clinton won a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford University. In 1973 he obtained a law degree from Yale University, and in 1978 was elected governor of Arkansas.

He is best known for his peace efforts in Ireland and the Balkan area.

5. James Madison


Considered one of the "fathers" of the US Constitution, James Madison had an IQ of 155.

Madison graduated from what has since become Princeton University in 1771 and then studied law.

He collaborated with Alexander Hamilton and John Jay to write "federal work" (Federalist Papers) in 1788, which proposed texts ratification of the Constitution.

Madison worked on the bill of rights (Bill of Rights) and served as Secretary of State under Thomas Jefferson.

In the ranking compiled by Simonton also includes Jimmy Carter (IQ 153), Woodrow Wilson (152). Theodore Roosevelt (149), James Garfield (148), Chester Arthur (148), Abraham Lincoln (148) Franklin D. Roosevelt (146) Millard Fillmore (143), John Tyler (142) and Franklin Pierce (141).
