Wikipedia sues NSA and the Department of Justice for site supervision



Nonprofit foundation behind Wikipedia encyclopedia sues US National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Justice for mass surveillance of Internet traffic to the site, reports DPA.

"Supervision erode the initial promise of the Internet as open space for collaboration and experimentation as a freedom from fear", said Tuesday Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, quoted in a statement.

Wikimedia Foundation blames US Government NSA and mass collection of online data between networks in the United States, that a violation of constitutional rights to privacy and freedom of expression.

The project proposes an amendment in 2008 of espionage law (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) that enables the collection "incidental" communications of American citizens if occurs when targeting the communications of foreigners believed to be living outside the US.

NSA has deliberately targeting ban American communications without a warrant in this regard.

The extent of NSA surveillance program was disclosed in 2013 by Edward Snowden. Their defenders argue that programs are needed to detect potential terrorists.

Lawyers for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed the complaint of the Wikimedia Foundation. The process is still betting Human Rights Watch (HRW), Amnesty International (AI) and the American National Association of lawyers for criminal cases.
