A paralyzed woman, aged 55, was able to fly with assault military aircraft F-35 and Cessna aircraft in a flight simulator using only their brain power.
To achieve this success were required two years of training, conducted as part of a revolutionary program supported by DARPA, an agency of the US Department of Defense that aims to develop new technologies for the armed forces.
Woman who participated in this program, Jan Scheuermann, remained paralyzed in 2003 due to a neurodegenerative genetic disorder. In 2012, she was recruited for this program. The DARPA experiment they used two electrodes placed on the surface of its motor cortex, the area of the brain that control limb movements.
Scheuermann began to learn how to control a robotic arm through simple exercises. Researchers found that women have a very good control of robotic Bras, using only the power of the mind to move, and decided to go further.
They thus helped to use their skills in a flight simulator and thus reached success today.
