Another European state legalized same-sex marriages


Slovenian parliament on Tuesday passed a law authorizing same-sex marriage, becoming the 11th state of the European Union legalizing same-sex marriage, reports Euronews.

Lawmakers adopted the law by 51 votes for and 28 against. They also voted in favor of legalizing adoption by couples of the same sex. Law to be signed by the President before they take effect.

Two parliamentary parties voted against this law, criticized by many civil groups, according to the Slovenian public television. The two parties have already announced that they will begin collecting signatures to organize a referendum. To cancel the law, but they need a fifth of the 1.7 million voters Slovenian and 340 people.

A small protest attended by several hundred people took place in Parliament, but recent opinion polls showed that 60 percent of citizens are in favor of same-sex marriages.

Worldwide, Slovenia will become the 21st state legalizing same-sex marriage.
