A prenatal blood test is able to detect cancerous tumors in the body for future mothers

A new genetic test that performs a sequential analysis of blood collected from pregnant women in order to detect any diseases of their babies as Down syndrome, is also able to detect cancer in the body for future mothers, Reuters informs.

In 40 cases, women who took the test MaterniT21, designed by the company Sequenom Inc., analyzing their genetic code and their fetuses, showed a number of anomalies which usually indicates the presence of cancer in the body for future mothers. For at least 26 of those women, the test in question has proven - through further analysis - to be fair.

Such tests, as created by the company Sequenom and other companies, sequenced the genetic code for future mothers blood, which includes both maternal DNA and fetal DNA. Detection of cancer occurrence has led researchers to assert that certain cancers may be diagnosed by means of non-invasive tests because their tumors "send" DNA into the bloodstream.

Eunice Lee, an anesthetist in San Francisco, was one of those women. She says its expected results of analyzes carried out from where he was assigned to be normal. Instead, the test designed by Sequenom has provided results which led it to make tests for cancer. After a full MRI, doctors discovered a tumor in the colon huge, they have removed it during the patient was 15 weeks pregnant.

Company representatives say that Sequenom MaterniT21 test gave no false positive result in terms of anticancer analysis.
